For Bedtime

A simple and soothing prayer for those who have a hard time moving from day to night. This poem was written for a friend’s parent whose memory loss is progressing. His spouse was in search of simple words they could say together in the transition toward bedtime.

It is time to settle and breathe a sigh

to set down the day and say goodbye

to busy things we try and tend,

the ways we fuss that never end.

It can wait while we dream and drift,

God is here for the long night shift.

You are warm sun from a day fully spent

so lie down, Beloved, at peace and content.
